Restaurant sofa BABILON

In a typical restaurant sofa the vertical channels run along the back, while the seat stays smooth. On BABILON the channels carry on across the whole seat surface and down the front edge, right to the floor.

It is the only model of ours where the stitching pattern runs around the whole sofa. From the other side of the room it reads as vertical stripes, not as an upholstered panel with a decorative back.

Measurements

A seat at 45 cm instead of 43

Almost all our sofas have the seat 43 cm above the floor, that is, level with an ordinary restaurant chair. BABILON stands 2 cm higher.

That difference tells when you sit for a long time. A higher seat means a less bent knee position and makes standing up easier. Older guests notice it in particular, and so do people who stay for a third coffee. At a table of standard height, 75 cm, that leaves 30 cm of clearance, so there is good room for legs.

If you are putting together a room where some seats are sofa and others are chairs, check the height of your chairs. At 43 cm the guests at the same table will be sitting at two different levels.

Rounded sides, a piece that looks finished from every angle

BABILON ends in a soft curve, and the seams run right out to the end. There is neither a raw edge nor a panel that has to be hidden.

The consequence is practical. The sofa can stand free in the middle of the room, with its back to a walkway or its side to a window, and it looks finished from every angle. Sofas with a sharp end have to be set against a wall or against another sofa to hide the side.

The piece stands on round legs 5 cm high. That is enough clearance under the seat for a mop to reach along the whole length.

Where BABILON works best

This model suits venues with a distinct interior, not places looking for a neutral background. The vertical stripes come into their own in rooms with space and light.

In one of our projects BABILON was delivered in two colours, mustard yellow and sea blue, in a room with a mural and a herringbone floor. The sofas were placed partly against the wall and partly free standing, back to back. Two sofas placed back to back create a ready made division of the room. It works in restaurants, hotel breakfast rooms, cafés and clubs.

Why it costs more than Paris

Two things make the difference, and both can be worked out.

The first is the stitching on the seat. Channels on a back are sewn flat. Channels on a seat have to run over a rounded front edge and hold an even spacing along the whole curve. That is a different job altogether.

The second is the height. BABILON is 100 cm instead of 95, that is, more fabric and more foam on every metre.

The price covers high resilience furniture foam and fabric from our range. The minimum we use is 40 000 Martindale, and most of the fabrics sit above 100 000.
