Bar furniture and bar sofas built to measure

A bar sofa is an upholstered seat fitted along the wall or along the bar line, in modules matched to the length of the venue. It is built for your room, not picked off a shelf.

More

Architects say bench seating, operators say sofa, and in enquiries from the web “bar sofa” is what most often appears. We price it the same either way, per linear metre.

How many people fit along the wall

One linear metre of bar sofa is roughly two seats. Along a six metre wall that gives twelve people in a space where chairs placed on both sides of the tables would have taken eight.

In a bar people sit closer together than in a restaurant, and that is the intention. Over a long meal we count 1.2 to 1.5 metres for a table for four, because the guest stays an hour or two. In a bar the visit is shorter, the turnover faster, and a tighter layout does no harm.

That is why a conversation about a bar starts with the drawing of the room, not with picking a model from the catalogue. The piece itself takes 50 to 70 cm in depth depending on the model, and that figure comes off the width of the room. The minimum order is one linear metre.

Three bar sofa models and what they cost

Three models, each with its own character and its own price level.

Model Price from Total height Character
BASIC 1 500 NOK per linear metre 75 cm the simplest shape and the lowest price in the catalogue
PARMA 1 700 NOK per linear metre 80 cm smooth back, 5 cm taller than BASIC
MONACO 2 500 NOK per linear metre 95 cm buttoned back, presentable at a cocktail bar

If you want to separate the zones in the room clearly, choose the MAX variant, which is the same piece with a taller back. MONACO MAX is 120 cm in total height against 95 cm in the base version.

Construction and seat height

The construction is dimensioned for a load that is different from the one at home. The frame is welded and reinforced in the corners, where the seats work hardest as someone stands up, and the foam is chosen at a density meant for continuous use. One guest sits for a quarter of an hour and leaves, the next takes the same seat five minutes later, and that is how the whole evening goes.

The seats sit 43 cm above the floor in all three models, that is, for tables at normal height.

We do not make raised sofas for high bar counters. At the counter itself bar stools are the right answer, and we make those to order together with the sofa.

What a bar sofa costs and why the price varies

The price depends on three things: the model, the fabric and the length of the run. A bar on a busy street and an air conditioned venue in the city centre put different demands on the material, so we do not quote one rate for everyone.

We prepare the quotation before the order, together with a drawing of the module layout, so that you know both the cost and the look before anything goes into production. Before production we ask for at least 50 % of the order value against a proforma invoice, and the balance is paid by bank transfer before dispatch.

In the opening budget you need no line for assembly. The construction is designed so that the staff put the modules in place as they carry them in. We will come and assemble it ourselves if you want us to.

Lead time

The lead time is four to six weeks, counted from the moment payment is registered.

BASIC and PARMA in black, in the standard 1.2 linear metre size, have fast delivery: up to three working days plus freight. That is the answer when the opening date has been announced and the furniture has not been ordered yet. What is on the shelf right now we will tell you on the phone: 968 27 586.

In a bar the fabric works against spillage

In a bar the fabric meets wear, but above all it meets what gets spilt on it. None of the fabrics we propose for serving venues sits below 40 000 Martindale cycles, and most pass 100 000. Faux leather you wipe with a damp cloth and move on, which is why it does better than velour in venues open in the evening.

Before we sew, we send fabric samples, within one to two working days after the call. The range is wider than the one shown in the catalogue, since we hold hundreds of samples, so the package is put together for your venue instead of containing everything. A colour on a screen and a colour under the bar lights are two different things, especially in warm bulb light, which mutes cold shades. Look at the sample in the venue at the time of day when the bar is actually working. We also have fabrics with various certificates, depending on what the venue requires.

Bar furniture beyond the sofa

A bar rarely changes only the seats. For the sofa we choose bar stools and tables in the same fabric, or in a contrast that still holds together, so the room looks as if it was furnished as one.

If part of the seating stays from the old fit out, we match the new modules to it in colour and back height. Chairs and tables are made in 7 to 14 working days, while a sofa to measure takes longer. Finished chairs wait with us until the sofa leaves production, and everything travels on one transport. The bar gets the whole set in one day and pays for one delivery.

Table tops we pick from AMA 80 and AMA 100 or from the small tables PU LAM 60, 70 and 80. We have been in the furniture trade since 2005 and deliver more than 50 orders a year, so we know which solutions hold up in a bar and which only look good in a photo.

Why the bar gets modules and not one long piece

A bar rarely has a straight wall along its whole length. Usually there are columns, an alcove by the entrance and a turn by the toilets, so the run is assembled from modules that go around the obstacles instead of running into them.

We make the modules at a maximum of 1.4 linear metres, as standard at one metre or 1.2. That length comes from the doors and stairwells the furniture has to pass through on delivery day. A corner is measured along the outside of the back and charged at the same rate as a straight run.

Bar sofas in real venues

Where the venue runs from morning until closing time, it is the fit to the shape of the room that decides comfort. In the bakery and café Kaffel in Gliwice the sofa runs along an old tiled wall, and the bottle green colour is taken straight from the tiles.

In the restaurant on Dob utca in Budapest we finished the same construction in a curve, with a rounded end, so that the seating closes the room instead of dividing it into rectangles. At bars we work the same way: we measure the venue and adapt the shape, instead of forcing a finished module into the wrong place.

How we start the quotation

Give us the length of the wall, the width of the room and how many seats you are aiming for. If you have a floor plan, send it. If you do not, a photo with measurements written on it will do.

The quotation is free and without obligation: 968 27 586.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bar sofa and bench seating in a bar?

None. They are two names for the same piece: an upholstered seat fitted along the wall or along the bar line, in modules matched to the venue.

How many people fit on a bar sofa?

About two people per linear metre. Along a six metre wall that gives twelve seats, against eight with chairs placed on both sides of the tables.

What does a bar sofa cost?

From 1 500 NOK per linear metre for BASIC, from 1 700 NOK for PARMA and from 2 500 NOK for MONACO. Freight comes on top and is charged per pallet.

Do you make tall sofas for a high bar counter?

No. Our seats sit at 43 cm, that is, for tables at normal height. At the counter itself bar stools are the right answer, and we make those to order together with the sofa.

What is the lead time?

Four to six weeks from the moment payment is registered. BASIC and PARMA in black, in the standard 1.2 linear metre size, have fast delivery: up to three working days plus freight.

What is the minimum order?

One linear metre.

How much has to be paid up front?

At least 50 % of the order value against a proforma invoice. The balance is paid by bank transfer before dispatch.

Which fabric survives spilt drinks?

Every fabric we propose for a serving venue is rated at a minimum of 40 000 Martindale cycles, and most above 100 000. In venues open in the evening faux leather does better than velour, because it is wiped off with a damp cloth.
