Kaffel is a bakery and café in a listed building at Krupnicza 12, just off the market square in Gliwice. The interior speaks to people who care about craft, and its signature is walls clad in old tiles. There we made 5.3 linear metres of PARIS sofa and twelve chairs, all to individual order, in four weeks.

We took the colour from the wall, not from the catalogue

The bottle green of the sofa is taken straight from the tiles on the wall it stands against. That is the reverse of the usual order: first the room, then the furniture, and not a piece chosen from whatever happens to be in the sample box.

Both fabrics come from the same velour collection, Bluvel: the sofa in shade 78, the chairs in 52. The colours stand in contrast, but the texture and the way the material throws light are the same, so the pairing does not fall apart into two different pieces that happen to stand side by side.

The chairs, model 175, went in a salmon shade, deliberately in contrast. In a venue where the wall is the strongest element of the interior, the seating can either compete with it or frame it. The green frames, the salmon breaks.

On this model the choice of colour is double, because the fabric is chosen separately from the stain on the wooden frame. We have ten stains, and the cover we sew as required, so the chair can be tuned to the interior as precisely as the sofa.

Four weeks on the whole order

The sofa and the chairs ran on the same clock at Kaffel. Chair 175 we make in four to six weeks, like the sofas made to measure, because it comes into being for the order in the chosen stain and fabric. That is the exception to our rule that chairs and tables ship in 7 to 14 working days.

Not a single part came from stock. The sofa and all twelve chairs were made to individual order, in the fabrics and measurements the customer chose. Everything was ready four weeks after payment was registered, that is, in the middle of the four to six week range. Freight comes on top.

On orders where the chairs are ready sooner than the sofa, we keep the finished parts with us until the sofa leaves production and send the whole delivery in one run. The customer then does not pay for an extra delivery and does not store chairs in a venue where work is still going on.

How much is 5.3 linear metres

That is what one wall at Kaffel took. If you want to convert it to your own venue, work on 1.2 to 1.5 linear metres per table for four, with the guests on the sofa on one side and on chairs on the other.

A run of that length does not arrive in one piece. We assemble it from modules of up to 1.4 linear metres, as standard one metre or 1.2, so that they pass through ordinary doors and so that the joints end up where they do not show. A listed interior rarely has straight walls and standard measurements, so we decide the division after measuring, not from the catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

Which sofa model stands at Kaffel?

PARIS to measure, in bottle green. Depth 70 cm, total height 95 cm, seat 43 cm from the floor.

Do you match the colour to an existing interior?

Yes, and at Kaffel the wall was exactly the starting point. We send fabric samples within one to two working days after a phone call, chosen for the particular venue.

How many metres of sofa went into Kaffel?

5.3 linear metres of PARIS plus 12 chairs, model 175. All to individual order, nothing from stock.

What does a sofa like that cost?

PARIS from 2 600 NOK per linear metre. Chairs model 175 we price separately, per piece.

Which fabric was used at Kaffel?

Velour from the Bluvel collection: the sofa in shade 78, the chairs in 52. Every fabric we propose for serving venues has at least 40 000 Martindale, and most of the range sits above 100 000.

Do the sofa and the chairs arrive at the same time?

Yes. If the deadlines differ, we store the finished parts in our warehouse and the whole order travels on one transport. At Kaffel they did not differ, because chair 175 has the same deadline as the sofa.

How long did the project at Kaffel take?

The whole order, sofa and chairs, was ready four weeks after payment was registered. The usual range for furniture made to measure is four to six weeks, plus freight.

How many wood stains are there for chair 175?

Ten. The cover we sew as the customer wishes, so the fabric colour and the wood colour are chosen separately.

Do you make furniture for venues in listed buildings?

Yes. With an unusual wall layout we measure on site or work from a floor plan sent to us, and we divide the piece into segments according to the actual doors and stairwells.
