Krzywy Domek at Bohaterów Monte Cassino 53 is one of the most recognisable buildings on the Polish coast, and at the same time a building without a single straight wall. We took part in the refurbishment of the food hall there and made sofas based on the PARIS model, rebuilt so that they follow the curve of the masonry.

A building without a single straight wall
Usually we tell customers that sending a floor plan is enough, and for rooms with a sloping wall or a column we ask for a few extra measurements. Krzywy Domek is the case where a floor plan gives nothing at all.
The wall waves in two planes at once, and the radius of the curve changes along its length. A piece fitted to the average of a wall like that would have stuck out in one place and run into the masonry in another, and on seating that follows the whole run you see every single centimetre of gap.
We went and measured the curve ourselves
Instead of calculating from the documentation, we travelled to Sopot and took the curve from life. That is a far easier decision than explaining to the customer a month later that the piece does not sit flush, because the building turned out to be different from the drawing.
We measure on site wherever the geometry of a space cannot be written down in two numbers. In most venues a floor plan or photos with wall measurements will do, but in a building like this, saving one journey would have cost the whole fit out.
Fabric on a curve works differently from fabric on a straight run
Material stretched over a curve lies differently, and with the wrong layout it wrinkles after a few months. You see that only after a season, when it is too late to put right.
On rounded sections we run the seams along the line of the curve, not across it. We plan the cut separately for every curved segment, instead of stretching a cut made for a straight run. Krzywy Domek got Belgian fabrics, chosen by the architect from the character of the interior.
What the shape costs
Changing the measurements itself costs nothing. Shortening a segment, giving one part of the room a different back height or cutting a recess for a column falls within ordinary design work, because we decide the cut of the fabric and the frame construction in our own workshop.
The curve is the exception, and we price it individually, because it needs its own pattern. The same goes for angles that are not square. A corner element at a right angle we charge at the same rate as a straight run, measured along the outer edge of the back.
PARIS starts at 2 600 NOK per linear metre. In the same family we have PARIS45 with diagonal channels, and for lounge areas the STILETTO armchair in a matched fabric.
Your venue does not have to be crooked for this to be worth something
Krzywy Domek is an extreme case, but the problem itself is common. A tenement with a wall leaning three degrees, an alcove left by a bricked up window, a column in the middle of the passage, an attic with a sloping roof over the guests’ heads: in all of those a finished catalogue piece leaves square metres unused.
A booth sewn for the room fills that space instead of going around it. We assemble the run from modules of up to 1.4 linear metres, as standard one metre or 1.2, so that they pass through ordinary doors and stairwells, and the joints end up where they do not show.
What to send if you have a similar problem
Photos from every side of the room and measurements of the walls are enough for us to say whether it can be done from a floor plan, or whether we have to come. If the wall is curved, say so straight away, because it changes both the quotation and the deadline.
