For the restaurant at Dob utca 21 in Budapest we made PARIS seating to measure. The venue has two rooms of entirely different character, so the same model went in two finishes: mustard in the glazed main room and dark in the intimate part by the stone wall.

The same piece in two rooms of opposite character

The main room is glazed and light, with a lemon green canopy above the tables. The other part is an intimate space by a stone wall, where the light is lower and the guest sits closer to the next table.

The mustard cover in the glazed room holds on to warmth of colour in a place that otherwise turns cool and transparent. The darker finish in the intimate part does the opposite: it absorbs light instead of throwing it back, and closes the smaller room.

Construction and model are identical in both rooms. The only thing that changes is the colour, and that costs the same, but gives two rooms instead of one repeated twice.

How a row of seating ends

Few people ask themselves that question when a room is being planned, but you see the answer in every finished venue. A run of sofa has to stop somewhere, and the simplest solution is to cut it straight off and cover the end with a flat side.

In Budapest we did it differently. The run travels along the wall and closes with a rounded end, so the seating carries the room onward instead of dividing it into rectangular blocks. On top of that came a decorative curve in the main room, matched to the layout of the space.

The ending is the detail that separates a piece drawn for the room from a piece set against a wall. It costs little, and you see it from anywhere in the venue.

How we calculate the shape

A straight run goes at the price per metre, and PARIS starts at 2 600 NOK. A corner element at a right angle costs the same as a straight one: we measure it along the outer edge of the back and add it to the total metres.

Curves and rounded ends are the only cases with a supplement agreed individually, because every such element needs its own pattern. On rounded sections we run the seams along the line of the curve, so that the fabric does not wrinkle after a few months.

Soft to the touch and hard wearing at the same time

We chose the fabric for the intensive use typical of hospitality, without giving up a soft finish. Those two things can pull in opposite directions, because the most hard wearing materials are sometimes the least pleasant.

We settle that in the choice, not afterwards. Every fabric we propose for serving venues has at least 40 000 Martindale, and most of our range sits above 100 000, so durability is the starting point and not a compromise. We hold hundreds of samples, which makes it possible to look for a material that meets both requirements at once, instead of choosing one at the expense of the other.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same model go in two colours in one venue?

Yes, and in Budapest that is exactly what we did. The glazed room got a mustard cover, the intimate one dark, with identical construction. Changing the colour between rooms does not raise the price.

How do you finish a run of sofa at the wall?

It can be cut straight off or closed with a rounded end. The second looks better, and that is how we did it in Budapest. We price it with a supplement agreed individually.

Is a corner element more expensive?

At a right angle, no. We measure it along the outer edge of the back, and it goes into the total metres at the same rate. Supplements apply only to curves and to angles that are not square.

Do you take orders in Hungary?
